There’s a stamp collection somewhere in that house worth a million dollars,” he said with a look in his eye like its whereabouts had disappointingly evaded him.

In 2006, we purchased a home from a guy named Dan. When Dan moved out, he left everything he no longer wanted. Closets full of the clothes of his deceased wife. Pots and pans, silverware, garbage, tools, and a basement full of boxes stacked to the ceiling.

Being eight months pregnant with five other young children, this did not excite me.

Confused, I called Dan to see when he would be coming to get the remainder of his stuff.

He wasn’t coming.

He told me to take it to Goodwill or throw it on the curb. He said it was his “dead wife’s stuff” that meant nothing to him, and he didn’t want it.

I remember hanging up, feeling so sad, and then mad. How awful to be so callous about someone’s belongings you supposedly loved (?), and how rude not to clean out the house before he handed over the keys!
