A Bear Might Maul You, but Some Men Will Kill You Over Salty Food

In a world where some men will kill women because they don’t enjoy their breakfast, bears are a safer option

A dining room scene featuring a man shouting at a woman who has just served him a plate of food. The man is middle-aged, wearing a business suit, and appears agitated. The woman, also middle-aged, is dressed in a simple blouse and skirt, holding a serving tray with a shocked expression. The background shows a traditional dining room with a large wooden table and chairs, tastefully decorated.

I didn’t plan to chime in on the women choosing bears over men debate. Yes, it’s funny how easily triggered some men are by women preferring bears to them, but their response is not surprising.

One reason I didn’t want to get involved is that, like most people who grew up in Africa, I am afraid of large predators. The other is that I’ve been fortunate; I’ve never been physically assaulted by a man.

Harrassed, catcalled and touched inappropriately? Yes, but never assaulted. So, I had a hard time choosing the bear.

What changed my mind in favor of the bear was a post about a husband who murdered his wife because he was angry about the food she cooked for him.

Usually, I would have sighed in frustration and moved on. Another day, another woman killed by a violent man. A far too common occurrence.

We all see these horrendous headlines about men killing their girlfriends and spouses. And people — often men — are quick to insinuate that the woman must have done something to deserve her fate.
