Motherhood, Masculinity, and the Fight for Equality: Why I’m Raising a Feminist Son
I want my son to be the force of change this world needs
Deep down in my heart, I knew I would have a little boy. After the ultrasound technician confirmed that I was going to have a boy, I was elated. Not only did I know at that moment what we would name our baby boy, but also that he would grow up to be a feminist.
I want my son to be the change I want to see in the world.
Today, more than ever, I believe in openness, equality, emotional intelligence, and tolerance as the antidote to the right-wing destruction we see around us every single day. As he grows up, I hope he will learn to embrace life’s complexities, nuances, and the subtle shades in between.
Coming from a diverse background, I hope he will find ways to combine his rich heritage and understand that there’s always more than meets the eye. I want him to take full advantage of his privileges while not breaking into pieces when faced with discrimination. I hope he will stay curious and never be bound by tradition, but instead, he should question, think critically, and understand himself so well that new experiences won’t throw him off course.
