Stop Using the Phrase “Breast is Best”
It Helps No One and Sells Formula
Breastfeeding my baby was and is very important to me. When breastfeeding works out it is amazing, convenient, and the most straightforward way to feed a baby.
Did you know that:
- breastmilk changes over time from feed to feed to meet a baby’s needs.
- breastmilk contains numerous antibodies to protect a baby against illness and disease
- breastfeeding releases oxytocin, the happy hormone, to the mother and baby, making them feel good
Breastfeeding can be described in many ways: amazing, frustrating, hard, and beautiful. However, it’s not helpful to call it best. This article explains why we should stop using the phrase “breast is best” and how it is actually used to sell formula milk.
1. Best is impossible
As mothers, there is an endless amount of pressure to be ‘best’, to be perfect. The best mother is never impatient or ill-tempered. The best mother does all the housework. The best mother enjoys motherhood all the time. The best mother is selfless and always puts her child first. The best mother breastfeeds her child.
No mother is ever going to be best. It’s impossible. We are all going to fall down somewhere.
