Voorhees is moving forward with small improvements around town. Road paving and repairs, stop signs installation and new equipment in two local playgrounds will be installed.

On Monday, Sept. 24, council members approved the proposal for the townships 2012 Road Program, the installation of stop signs on Fourth and Fifth Streets and approved to move forward with installing playground equipment in Green Ridge and Sandpiper playgrounds.

Every five years, the township engineers go around town and evaluate all the roads, grading them on a scale from one to five.

The township engineer Joe Hale and township manager Larry Spellman said the roads needing the most attention are more likely to get a rating closer to one.

Paving will be done on Eastwood Drive, Sussex Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Elena Court, Addington Court, Oxford Court and portions of Hardwood Drive.

Included in the project, sidewalks to Sandpiper playground on Willowbrook Way will be extended, Hale said.

Hale also mentioned before any paving begins, the underground utilities must be in good shape. If any utility repairs are needed, it will be done before asphalt is laid down.

The projects start date is still pending, but it is expected to be completed in 45 days with weather permitting.

Patchwork and miscellaneous curb repairs will be done with the money left over from the project. Hale said the roads would be attended to in “the best way we can.”

To add to the road improvements, stop signs are being erected on Fourth and Fifth Streets to limit the amount of detouring traffic in the area.

“People are using those streets as a [short cut],’” said Spellman. “The stop signs will hopefully control traffic.”

Playground improvements are also expected to take place in the first week of November. The original playground set will be removed from Green Ridge playground on Round Hill Road and Sandpiper Drive playground on Willowbrook Way to make way for newer playground sets, Spellman said.
