Tickle your thespian bone

What could be better for an aspiring theater performer or a student looking to hone his or her acting chops with a free theater class taught by a Broadway actor? Voorhees students are invited to a vocal master class with Aaron Lazar, fully sponsored and funded by the Voorhees Theatre Company.
The program will be held on May 7 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Voorhees Middle School, 1000 Holly Oak Drive, Voorhees. Voorhees students ages 14 to 22 are only eligible to attend the free event. Parents are encouraged to join their students at the class.
Lazar will work one on one with a pre-selected group of students, coaching them on vocal techniques in a mock audition format. Lazar will also lead the entire class in performance exercises and conduct a question and answer session.
Lazar’s Broadway 101, a performance and master class, has been brought to not-for-profit organizations including the Lincoln Center.
To ensure meaningful participation by all attendees, this class is limited to the first 100 students who register. There is no cost to participate, but you must be registered to attend. To register, e-mail karen@voorheestheatre.org. Registration deadline is April 30.
To be considered for one on one coaching from Lazar, the company said to attach a digital recording of a Broadway-style vocal performance up to two minutes, a capella or instrumental only accompaniment with a one-page summary of your vocal training and experience. Students selected for individual coaching will be notified in advance and supplied instructions.
Accompanying Lazar is Michael Lavine who has worked as a musical director, pianist, vocal coach and singer all over the world. According to the company, Lavine gives master classes on auditioning in New York, Los Angeles, Australia, Martha’s Vineyard and other locations.
Donations to Broadway Cares and Equity Fights AIDS, a leading industry-based non-profit aids fundraising and grant-making organization, will be accepted.
The Voorhees Theatre Company is a nonprofit community theatre organization providing opportunities for young people to experience theatre as performers, technicians, managers and audience members.
