Voorhees Theatre Company presents “Seussical, Jr.”
Beloved characters from children’s literature come to life on stage in Voorhees with “Seussical, Jr.,” a musical tribute to celebrated author Dr. Seuss. Produced by the Voorhees Theatre Company in conjunction with Voorhees CER, “Seussical, Jr.” is the culmination of the annual summer theatre program and features more than 170 young people ages 8 to 16 as performers and technicians, from Voorhees, Marlton, Cherry Hill, Berlin and other South Jersey towns.
In this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza, some of Dr. Seuss’s most endearing characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz and Lazy Mayzie, transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.
The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing a world of tiny Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.
Fun for the entire family, “Seussical, Jr.” is one of the most-performed shows in America. Performances are Wednesday, July 31, at 10 a.m.; Thursday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 2, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 each and may be purchased at the box office one hour before the performance.
