The Voorhees Theatre Company, in conjunction with the Voorhees Community Education and Recreation (CER) Department, will once again offer its successful and popular summer theatre program from June 25 to Aug. 2. More than 150 children in grades three to eight are expected to participate in this summer’s production of Shrek the Musical Jr.

Now in its 15th year, the VTC summer theatre program attracts young performers from many South Jersey communities, including Voorhees, Cherry Hill, Marlton, Gibbsboro and Berlin. The program takes place at the Voorhees Middle School.

Participants split their days between rehearsing for the show and participating in a variety of inter-active workshops taught by local theatre professionals. Workshops typically include topics such as stage combat, dance, vocal training and many others. The program will culminate with six performances of Shrek the Musical Jr.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and hit Broadway musical, Shrek the Musical, Jr. is an irreverently fun show for audiences of all ages. In a faraway kingdom, the green ogre Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits runaways who’ve been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task. If he rescues feisty Princess Fiona from the Dragon-guarded tower, his swamp will be returned to him. But, a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without unexpected twists and turns along the way.

Registration begins March 15. Materials are available at www.voorheestheatre.org/summerprogram, at the Voorhees CER office at the Voorhees Middle School, or by emailing Karen@voorheestheatre.org. The program will run for six weeks, Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $650 for Voorhees residents and $675 for nonresidents. Before and after-care is available.
