Good story, especially the above observation. It is already happening, automatically.

Anyone trying to persistently promote anything non-profit, is quickly and automatically filtered out of the forwarding feeds (Recommended reading lists), therefore discriminated against, and effectively gagged in for-profit media, just because there is nothing in it for the media owners.

Technology itself is not a driver, it is just a tool which can be used for good or bad.

Profit-driven social media will be beaten by new technology, which, combined with the wisdom of the crowd, really does have the power to reverse all the ills of neoliberalism.

That saviour technology is worldwide peer-to-peer cryptocurrency fuelled, crowd powered, non-profit user-owned social media alternatives offering users a better-than-free experience (ie where they get paid for using them).

But right now, for the reason above, it is very difficult to promote such systems.

There also appears to be an ongoing blocking war by ISPs against any form of encrypted peer-to-peer communications, facilitated most recently in the US by the reversal of net neutrality laws. Again, this is simply driven automatically by profit driven algorithms which seek to block internet traffic whch has no useful information from which ISPs can profit, thus allocating more bandwidth to more profitable data souces.

I know these things from my own ongoing quest to promote VRENAR.
