Smiling is the main thing when working on Vue Storefront

After the first international hackathon in Milan, there was a second hackathon outside of Vue Storefront homeland Poland. The 6th Vue Storefront Hackathon took place in Amsterdam on February 12th. Hosted by Get.Noticed, the Vue Storefront Core Partner from the Netherlands.

The sixth hackathon took place just before the VueJS Amsterdam, the biggest VueJS conference in the world.

The day started with a good cup of coffee and an introduction to the day by Patryk Tomczyk from the Vue Storefront core team. After setting up the local machines the developers start digging away at the issues on GitHub which were labeled for the VS 1.9 milestone. Or by working on own Vue Storefront implementations.

With Patryk Tomczyk from Poland and developers from France, Germany, and the Netherlands it was truly an international hackathon. There were also developers that joined in remotely through the Vue Storefront Slack channel.

One of the results from this hackathon included product videos in the product media gallery, as there was originally no video player implemented. After sparring with Patryk to overcome an issue the next day after the hackathon the pull request for this feature was submitted. Awesome work.

An important part of an open source project with an ever-growing community is accurate documentation and keeping this documentation up to date. At this hackathon there are several documentation updates submitted.

Another feature that was submitted that day was the solution for clearing applied filters at once on the product list. The issue was solved and also a little refactoring of the code to loop through the available filters was added.

There was also an issue with product configurations, once you choose a product color on the product list and went to the product detail page the wrong image was set. This was caused by the product gallery carousel that was not initialized when the product configuration is set.

After investigation of the issue, there was a sparring session with Patryk about how to solve it. After this conversation, we decided to split up the product gallery component into child components. This made it possible to set the correct image in the carousel and solve this issue.

One of the advantages of a hackathon is surely the opportunity to discuss topics with other developers, which makes it possible to see different views on matters. Over the day there were several discussions and sparring sessions on how to go about different features. For example, implementing payment methods in the checkout. The presence of a core developer in the person of Patryk Tomczyk was very educational and informative because you could verify your work and learn a lot of him for investigating issues and tracking down the problem.

Patryk’s help during this hackathon was priceless, and we appreciated it a lot at Get.Noticed.

The next day many attendees of the hackathon met at VueJS Amsterdam to discuss future projects and listen to inspiring speeches, including Sébastien Chopin (co-author of Nuxt.js) and Filip Rakowski (co-founder and core developer of Vue Storefront).

As a Get.Noticed, would like to thank all the attendees and especially Patryk Tomczyk who made this hackathon a success. We’ll be more than glad to host another hackathon in the near future.
