This was my fourth International Journalism Festival (IJF) and I have learned over the years that the best approach is to use my time at the conference meeting and networking, and catch up on the rich programme on YouTube.

The Festival was held a few weeks after the Walkley Foundation and Google News Initiative wrapped up 12 months of popular workshops to help journalists around Australia to improve their data journalism skills.

I’ve just finished reviewing the sessions on data journalism, and this article includes my top picks if you want to take your data storytelling to the next level.

Data journalism is never static. Innovative newsrooms are always pushing boundaries, sometimes in simply finding and using existing datasets, sometimes expanding collaborations across borders, and sometimes finding new ways to engage audiences. Listen to the experiences of some of the newsrooms on the cutting edge of data journalism around the world.

How do data journalists work? Who do they collaborate with, and what are the latest trends and sought after skills within the field? These are just some of the questions The State of Data Journalism Survey 2022 asks journalists around the world every year. From identifying favourite data tools to sharing thoughts on the future of the field, this panel discussion delved into the current state of data journalism.

Great data journalism is often seen as a resource-intensive exercise that only huge newsrooms can afford to indulge in. But the speakers in this panel prove that’s not the case. Working in small teams — sometimes alone — they managed to pull off some of the year’s best work. Learn from their experiences, tips and techniques.

To understand the proprietary technologies that govern our lives you need data — sometimes lots of it. In this presentation, The Markup’s Leon Yin and WIRED’s Dhruv Mehrotra discussed strategies to find and build datasets needed to analyze algorithms.

If you missed the Walkley Foundation workshops, this session was a great catch-up on Google tools including Google Lens, Pinpoint and Structured Data Explorer, that all aim to help journalists find and verify stories.
