How to pitch to The Walkley Magazine
Be pithy. Tell us something new about journalism.
In print four times a year, and online year-round, The Walkley Magazine celebrates the best in journalism with a unique perspective from Australia and New Zealand. As the only forum for discussion of media and professional issues by and for journalists, we welcome story pitches and ideas.
As a platform for industry discussion we aim to support each other. Our preference is to examine trends across the industry rather than focus on individuals or organisations. Obviously every story can’t have a happy ending, but criticism should be constructive and possible solutions considered.
We welcome articles on issues broadly related to the media, journalism and how we practice the craft, and have a particular interest in innovation — for instance, our Nerd Box series features data journalism. You might contribute a feature or news story, a photography series, an editorial cartoon, comic or illustration, or a multimedia piece. There is also room for opinion pieces, humour, and reviews of books, podcasts or documentaries.

Word length varies, but an average of 1,000 words applies to most stories. We can discuss what suits your piece best.
As a non-profit, we rely on the generous voluntary contributions of the great writers, artists and photographers who make the Walkley the forum it is for our industry.
About editing and publishing
We edit in Google docs and will work through any questions with you in that format.
When it comes to publication time:
Already on Medium?
- We’ll add you as a writer on our Medium publication.
- Start a draft post with some dummy text.
- Click the … icon at top right.
- Click “Add to publication” and choose “The Walkley Magazine.”
New to Medium?
- Go to medium.com and make a Medium account (you can do this very quickly by using your Google, Facebook or Twitter logins, or make a separate account).
- Write us back and let us know what your handle is.
- We’ll add you as a writer on our Medium publication. (You’ll get a notification.)
- Start a draft post with some dummy text.
- Click the … icon at top right.
