New Zealand freelance journalist Michelle Duff has worked for news organisations all over the world—you may have seen her viral story on Maori women’s chin tattoos in Vice a while back. From her lightning talk at Storyology, here are a few of her tips for anyone considering work as a freelancer:

1. Contacts are everything.

2. Nail the pitch — don’t promise things you can’t deliver.

3. Check your spelling.

4. Land a regular gig.

5. Be smart — research your topic.

6. Get an accountant.

7. Write lists. Be organised. Manage your workload.
