With our journalism festival “Shining A Light On The Truth” kicking off in Perth on November 2, we’re giving a handful of student reporters the run of the event. We encourage them to pester attendees, let their festival curiosity run wild and pitch story ideas.

The work they do is a central part of how we communicate what’s happening at the festival to the outside world, so our standards are high! And, consistently, we’ve found they rise to the challenge.

We’re delighted to have Edith Cowan University backing the Shining A Light Newsroom, with three bright young reporters. Check them out!

Yvonne Ardley

Yvonne Ardley

Yvonne Ardley did her undergraduate degree in journalism and broadcasting at ECU where she discovered her love of storytelling. She is now nearing completion of her post graduate diploma in Broadcasting, also at ECU. Outside of University she’s a volunteer horse riding coach for people with disabilities, as well as the youngest board member and Secretary of Claremont Therapeutic Riding Centre.

Samantha Goerling

Samanthe Goerling

Samantha is currently completing the Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting at Edith Cowan University. Previously she completed Honours in Political Sciences and International Relations, and French Studies at the University of Western Australia. After this year she aims to work in news and current affairs and eventually as a foreign correspondent.

Andrew Murdoch

Andrew Murdoch

I grew up moving from regional town to regional town and in doing so developed a passion for building relationships and telling stories. Studied journalism at Curtin and landed a job at the Kalgoorlie Miner. Worked there in the Goldfields for just over a year learning the ropes in a region bursting with news. After starting in print, I wanted to explore the opportunities in broadcasting and enrolled into ECU Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting.

Simon Orchard

Simon Orchard

Simon Orchard is a journalism and PR graduate with a passion for interesting, engaging and exciting yarns. Former Fairfax journalist, current ECU broadcaster, avid sport fan and border collie lover. I want the truth — minus the sugar coating.

Photographer: Corina Stagg

Corina Stagg

Corina is an emerging documentary director and producer. She’s been completing her double degree in a Bachelor of Media and Communications and Bachelor of Arts with Edith Cowan University, majoring in Film Production and History. In her spare time, she does photography for events and weddings. After she completes her degrees, Corina hopes to continue her study in Film Masters.
