Ten international newsletters to subscribe to this week
Walkley Foundation head of professional development, Corinne Podger, shares her top tips to get journalism news in your inbox.
The fundamentals of good journalism — accuracy, independence, good storytelling, and serving our audiences — will never change. But the tech and platforms to support it are in constant flux, and to help keep on top of all that change, I subscribe to a wide range of newsletters. Below are my top international picks — and if you have a favourite that’s not listed, drop me an email and I’ll add it later!
The Fix
“The Fix” shares solutions to journalism’s business model problem. It’s a UK-based newsletter that collects case studies and examples from all over the world. Subscribe to their newsletter by scrolling to the bottom of their landing page.
International Press Institute
The International Press Institute (IPI) is a global network of editors, media executives and journalists, headquartered in Vienna. Here you’ll find news about journalism innovation and technology, and regular events including their annual conference. Subscribe to their newsletter here.
James Cridland
James Cridland is a radio and podcast expert based in Australia, but I’ve included him in this list because his Podnews newsletter has a global focus on innovation and business models in the global radio and podcasting landscape. Subscribe to it here.
News Product Alliance
The News Product Alliance is based in the US and is a global network of journalists, editors, researchers focused on one thing: developing a sustainable future for journalism through business model and product-thinking innovation. They have a fortnightly newsletter that you can subscribe to here.
Nieman Journalism Lab
Nieman Lab is based at Harvard University in the US. It was set up in 2008 as digital disruption picked up momentum and journalism job cuts increased in number. NiemanLab’s newsletter shares news and research about journalism innovation and business model experiments — from start-ups to big newsrooms. Subscribe to their daily and weekly newsletters here.
Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism
The RISJ is headquartered in Oxford, and shares its own research, plus terrific insights from all over the world about journalism innovation, new tech like AI, how to reach youth audiences, and — of course — business models. You’ll find the newsletter subscription link a third of the way down the landing page.
Solutions Journalism Network
Solutions journalism involves covering responses to social problems with the same rigour and evidence-based reporting that we bring to traditional news journalism. It can help improve audience engagement and trust in news. The SJN has several newsletters which you can browse and subscribe to here.
Splice Newsroom
Splice is based in Singapore and is focused on sharing news about viable business models, no matter what size your newsroom. They also share a lot of news about Asia, which is great as most of the big newsletters about journalism innovation are published in the US and Europe. They have several newsletters which you can browse and subscribe to here.
Twipe
Twipe is a tech company based in Belgium. They create and sell software for digital publishers, which I’m not here to promote. What I do love though is their free fortnightly newsletter about digital trends shaping the future of news, which you can subscribe to here.
World Association of News Publishers
WAN-IFRA is a global membership association of publishers, with offices all over the world. They have eight newsletters to choose from — focused on reader revenue, media innovation, media policy, and specialist newsletters for printers, editors, executives, newsroom leaders, and one focused entirely on news about journalism in South Asia. Pick the ones you want to subscribe to here.
