The Walkley Talks Storyology episodes are here!

As the year draws to a close, the perfect time presents itself to catch up on everything you might have missed in the past 12 months — a good book, some much-needed sleep and those fantastic Walkleys events you were meaning to get to but never did.

Storyology 2017’s keynote speeches are now live and available for download through the WalkleyTalks podcast.

Twelve new episodes are available, showcasing industry leaders and international guests who graced the stage at this year’s Storyology festival held in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney back in August.

The phenomenon of ‘fake news’ was a hot topic this year, with several seminars examining what it means to be a journalist in the era of post-truth and President Trump.

One highlight of Storyology 2017 was a keynote from Aine Kerr, the manager of Facebook’s Journalism Project, explaining the steps that the social media giant has taken to dismantle disinformation and aide quality journalism.

Her fascinating talk is particularly timely given the unfolding FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The aptly titled, WTF is happening in the USA?, tackles similar issues, as an expert panel comprising of Leigh Sales, David Rowe, Tonya Mosley and Damien Cave attempt to make sense of President Trump and the proliferation of untruths.

Also offering his voice to the fight against fake news is Stanford University’s John S. Knight fellow for 2017, Frederic Filloux, who explains his invention of an algorithm that rates the trustworthiness of digital news sources based on statistical facts.

Truth, trust and Trump tangled together does sounds rather disheartening… but it’s not all doom and gloom.

The new episodes offer plenty of practical advice for journalists navigating the converging media landscape.

Google News Lab’s Irene Jay Liu explains how journos can better utilise the global search engine in The New Reporting Toolkit, while audio gurus Jess Bineth, Monique Bowley and Alice Workman discuss the dos and don’ts of DIY podcasting in Turn Your Story into a Killer Podcast.

Documentary maker Ivan O’Mahoney, Four Corner’s Caro Meldrum-Hanna, The Australian’s Dan Box and American journo Aaron Glatz, make up a stellar panel in Structuring Stories to Grab an Audience. The multi award-winning panelists offer guidance on crafting narratives and telling stories innovatively across multiple platforms.

As well as practical advice, Storyology 2017 presented critical insights into our industry at home and abroad.

Media in Full Colour — Reflecting the Real Community is a panel discussion that debates diversity in the Australian media and what newsrooms can do to better reflect our multicultural society. With speakers like NITV’s Allan Clarke, who describes growing up in rural Australia as a gay, Aboriginal man, this episode makes for humbling listening.

There’s also a delightful conversation with cousins Ben and Andrew Quilty, who both reflect on creating art and visual journalism in the line of fire with moderator Jennifer Byrne.
