Wanderers raises $2M Seed Round led by Animoca Brands and GameFi Ventures

Wanderers, the dynamic sci-fi media brand behind the Wanderers NFT collection, announced today that it has raised $2M in a Seed Round of funding led by Animoca Brands and GameFi Ventures.

Wanderers has built a world of immediately recognizable IP worth millions. The brand has done over $17.5M in NFT trading volume and sold over $4.9M worth of NFTs. Leveraging its one-of-a-kind IP, Wanderers has transcended NFTs, also releasing short films, publishing stories, and hosting sold-out live events.

Wanderers is using this funding to develop a video game in partnership with Blowfish Studios to be released in 2024. In addition to investing in Wanderers, Animoca Brands and GameFi Ventures will also serve as tokenomics advisors.

“As a fan of sci-fi movies growing up, it’s incredible to now be building a multimedia universe full of characters and stories,” Nick Greenawalt, founder of Wanderers, commented: “We’re blurring the line between web2 and web3, growing from stories and JPEGs into films, music, and gaming. The Wanderers brand has been non-traditional from the start. Greenawalt is a professional motion designer and full-time creator that started selling NFTs on SuperRare. After seeing success there, Greenawalt’s older brother convinced him to create an NFT collection. To build out the IP for the collection, Greenawalt found a skilled team of writers, musicians, and developers via platforms like Reddit and Instagram, and they collaborated to create Wanderers. The Wanderers team did not meet face-to-face until they had already sold millions worth of NFTs.

Storytelling is one of the biggest value propositions of the brand. The project’s first short film, titled The Wanderers: Genesis told the vivid backstory of the characters in the Wanderers collection. For the second short film, the team hosted a casting call for NFT-holders to pitch why their characters should be in the film.

NFT-holders do not just view a story, but participate in telling the story themselves. “The universe that Nick is creating with The Wanderers is jam packed with utility. The same utility I get while watching Star Wars, but I’m part of the story,” tweeted one NFT-holder.

Lead investor Animoca Brands is a global leader in gamification and blockchain, with a large portfolio of over 380 Web3 investments including Yuga Labs, Cool Cats, Axie Infinity, Dapper Labs, Immutable, and Magic Eden. Animoca Brands operates various subsidiaries including The Sandbox, the leading decentralized metaverse.
