The War on Cubicle Body

I knew it had been a while since I’d published here, but I sort lost track of how long it had been. A lot has happened since my last writing: I started and finished grad school and now have an MBA, business travel resumed and I did a lot of that, my position was eliminated at the end of 2022, and I started a new business.

The MBA program was an 18-month experience that took up a lot of my free time. As a result, my fitness regimen took a back seat. Early on, the time constraints didn’t quite sink in and I tried, and abandoned, training for a couple of marathons. Eventually, I was able to adjust my routine and rely more on strength training at the gym, treadmill running, and the occasional run streak to keep my fitness somewhat on track.

A family member ran his first marathon last year — the Marine Corps Marathon — and we decided to run it together this year. While I’m generally in better shape than I was at the beginning of the war on cubicle body, I’m not in marathon shape by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I did a ten-mile run yesterday that pretty much felt like the first one I ever attempted at that distance.

As of this writing, I’m carrying about 15 pounds more weight than I’d like, but I was able to run ten miles, and I generally stronger than I ever have been, so I think it all nets out to a positive. Having said that, I have backslid and am not where I like to be.

Which is probably why I’m checking back in here after over two years. Reading previous posts, it would be easy to assume that I reached my goals and it was happily ever after, but that was not the case. It started this journey for better health, and I have achieved that, but it is a lifelong journey. As such, there are always ups and downs and only talking about the ups is inauthentic.

So this year is a push toward a marathon — my first in three years. Between now and then will be a few other races and a lot of training. Let’s get to it.
