Let’s overreact to the Orioles draft pick!
Ah, the MLB Draft. It’s a time for renewed optimism, eternal hope and unlimited expectations. These are things that the Baltimore Orioles and their fans are not good at dealing with.
As of this writing, the first two rounds of the 2018 draft are in the books. So far, the O’s have selected high school pitcher Grayson Rodriguez out of Texas and shortstop Cadyn Grenier, a junior from Oregon State.
If you listened last week, you know that the guys preferred a college hitter with the first pick. However, take that with a massive grain of salt. We aren’t scouts. We just want a player that the Orioles are less likely to break.
Going with a high schooler at the top of the draft is always a risky proposition. They are young, inexperienced, yada, yada, yada. A lot can go wrong.
However, they are also a lot more exciting. Their physical tools are often otherworldly, and they have usually avoid most serious injuries to that point in their young careers.
There is a lot of good stuff out there about Rodriguez. He is a BIG dude amd he has apparently already been working hard in the gym to get ready for the pros. Those things bode well for his future performance.
If he could become the next Dylan Bundy, things will be going very well in Baltimore. If he’s Matt Hobgood? Well, let’s not talk about that right now.
