For many, this summer was a memorable one. That amazing break between the start and end of school is brimming with time and opportunity.

Although the weather on the west coast always tends toward chill and damp regardless of the season, Seattleites do make an effort to put together those fresh summer looks.

Woman at CHPB

Here, a woman at the Capitol Hill Block Party dons a sheer-sleeved flower-print top, perfect for both the overcast and clear skies that took up the day. The summer heat provides a much-needed change from the constant onslaught of rain. Many people, myself included, use this time to try out new styles and statement pieces. Oftentimes in the summer, anything goes. Part of the beauty of Seattle specifically is that nobody wants to fit in. Sometimes a void of angst, the sunshine and vitamin D positively illuminates some of the edgy energy that exists inside of Seattle.

“Stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni”: this young chap is owning his look

Especially in downtown Seattle and nearing the skater scene, style becomes an imperative mode of expression. Here a young man wearing a cowboy hat, a flower-print shirt, and rolled up jeans blatantly defies any sort of adherence to fashion rules while at the same time perfectly showing his own personality. Fashion reflects fads that come and go. While style does not necessarily contradict fashion, it is much more representative of one’s personal relationship with clothing and appearance. Since none of these articles of clothing would have made sense together before this picture, he is an ideal representation of style with no regards to fashion.

Apart from the downtown scene, summer wear boasted lots and lots of bright or pastel colors. Beach wear also became increasingly popular this year due to the warmer, drier weather and glitter-drenched music festivals, proven to be the ideal spot to try out mesh and sheer pieces that wouldn’t fit into any other event. Thankfully, the transparent, un-breathable plastic clothing that fogged up finally became obsolete this summer, a trend I am glad is over. Knit tops, cheeky bodysuits, any type of fringe, casual tank tops, and loose jeans and jean shorts dominated Instagram posts during this hot season. A great season for the look books, summer 2018 proved to be an inclusive one for finding your favorite personal looks!
