“Snow Day” by Barbara R. Vance

Aaaaah, snow days. We certainly had a lot of those this February since there were only seven days of school. I think it’s safe to say that the amount of snow in February was nominated for the list of “Snowiest Days in Our Lifetimes,” and as such was appropriately accompanied by snowball fights and shoveling the driveway in equal measures. Let’s take a second to recap the snow days and their effects on school now.

The first snow day turned into the second snow day, and as time went on, teachers decided to take one of two paths. The first was to send out lectures, video lessons, and assignments over Canvas in order to keep their class on track. This path drained some of the joy of a day off as students sat down for a session of in-class work and homework combined. However, there is little stress to cram in all the curriculum now that school is back in session.

On the other hand, it was not possible for all teachers to present new materials online. Some classes decided simply to cut material due to lost time. Although it did reduce stress, it also means that students are getting less out of their classes. As the number of snow days grew, it was announced that Overlake would begin to add days back from the year that would originally have been off for students. Thankfully, there is only one of these days, and that’s March 11th.

In any case, both students and teachers are glad to be back in the swing of things (or as glad as they can be). Let’s hope the arctic air heading toward us now won’t bring more snow.
