The Big Story

It kicked off its opening weekend by earning a record-breaking $117 million, breaking records for largest September opening, largest Fall opening, largest opening for an R-rated horror film, and the biggest opening for a horror film of any rating; yeah It had a big weekend. Adapted from a Stephen King novel, It dominated this weekend accounting for nearly 75% of all ticket sales and beating Open Road’s Home Again by about $110 million. As I said in my review last weekend, It was a horror movie that was executed perfectly, included a stellar cast that gave compelling performances, and those elements of this movie helped propel It to an incredible haul at the box office. You should consider getting out to see this film especially if you are a fan of the genre; it’s a must see film.

Other Takeaways From This Week

Home Again was in a distant second this weekend earning a little over $9 million. I have not been out to see this movie yet, and the critic’s reception has been more than a little-mixed leaning towards not-so-great. I actually wouldn’t mind getting out to see this, I’m a sucker for a good rom-com, and I’ll even get out to see a half-decent one too, but with Mother! and American Assassin coming out this weekend I’ll most likely not have an opportunity to view this one for a little while.

Lionsgate’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard came in third bringing in around $4.85 million over the weekend and raising its total earnings over four weeks to just under $65 million. That’s not too bad considering it had a $30 million budget. In fourth place, and still hanging around, is Annabelle: Creation. This movie earned 4 million dollars bringing its five-week total to around $96 million. Rounding out the top 5 this weekend is another one of my favorites from this summer, Wind River. Bringing in around $3 million and earning $25 million over six weeks Wind River is a very well executed gritty crime drama, and I’m glad to see it in the top 5, I’ll always cheer for great original stories.

That will bring this box office discussion to a close, but I’m curious to know, what did you see this weekend? Do you guys plan on getting out to see any of these, or are you waiting for another movie? Let me know in the comments below, and remember to follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Thanks, everyone, I’ll see you at the movies!
