You would run like hell, right?

September 12, 1952: The Flatwoods Monster Appears

68 years ago, seven witnesses and a dog came across a horrifying 10-foot tall creature known as the Flatwoods Monster in Braxton County, West Virginia.

Brothers Ed and Freddie May noticed a strange fiery ball in the sky while playing ball with some friends. They gathered more people for their search and ventured into the woods. They wish they didn’t.

As soon as the search party traveled deeper into the woods, a noxious smell made them sick. A shrieking figure with glowing orange eyes and a spade-shaped head approached the crew, its feet never touching the ground. The people didn’t wait a second for the alien creature to come closer and ran with their lives.

After the incident, investigators went to the woods to search for evidence. They only found particular skid marks and mysterious goo.

More monster eyewitness accounts popped up nearby cities. Audra Harper of Heaters, WV, claimed to have seen the monster hovering near her neck of the woods. Couple George and Edith Snitowsky were driving from New York when the monster approached their vehicle. This time, it showed its reptilian features.

News of the Flatwoods Monster spread like wildfire. Of course, everybody in 1952 was already at the edge of their seats. You have the Cold War, atomic bomb rumors, and the friendly next-door neighbor who might be a communist.

To This Day

What was the Flatwoods Monster doing in the woods? Where did it go? Will it ever come back?

People still argue whether the Flatwoods Monster exists to this day. Some believe it’s an authentic alien. Skeptics think it was only an owl. What kind of owl has glowing eyes and emits a barf-inducing scent?

The Flatwoods Monster has become a beloved figure in cryptid lore. It has appeared in video games, books, and countless movies. You can even visit the Flatwoods Monster Museum in Sutton, West Virginia.

The Mountain State is already freaky enough with Mothman and Bigfoot running around. If you ever find yourself in West Virginia, keep your eyes peeled for any towering, hissing aliens in the woods.
