No.

There’s your short answer. If that’s all you’re after then feel free to pop off now. But if you want a bit more then I can give that to you too.

Crianlarich is a small village in Glen Strathfillan, around 8 miles north of Loch Lomond. The population is somewhere around the 200 mark.

And if you are following the Inverarnan to Tyndrum leg of the West Highland Way on AllTrails then it’s going to tell you to head into it.

But you don’t have to.

Half of the yellow hill is simply making your way back up from Crianlarich

You will reach a crossroads, with a sign pointing to the left saying West Highland Way and a sign pointing right saying Crianlarich.

The map on AllTrails tells you to go down the hill to Crianlarich and then come back up the hill to continue on the West Highland Way path.

You may have even spent the rest of the day dreading this portion of the hike, with its formidable elevation. But if you are continuing onto Tyndrum that day you can skip it out, saving a few hundred meters of climbing and a couple kilometers of distance.

En Route to the Crianlarich Crossroads

Of course, if you’ve got accomodation booked in Crianlarich then it’s probably a good idea to head down. And if you’re running low on supplies then you can pop in for a supply run before continuing on your way.

But if you’re worried about not completing the full 96 miles should you avoid it, there’s no need to. Hike on, hike on.
