Soul Mate, Twin Flame, or Karmic Relationship?

The differences make all the difference in the world

Do you have people in your life that you just can't explain? Where did they come from? Why are they here? They drive me crazy! But I miss them when they’re gone! That’s because they fit into one of the following three categories. If you can discern what purpose they serve in your life, or you in theirs, it makes it a lot easier to deal with them. Information is knowledge! Knowledge is power!

Karmic Relationship

What is a karmic relationship?

The notion behind a karmic relationship is twofold. One, break the cycles of bad behavior from past lifetimes and learn how to heal from past traumas. Unlike Twin Flames and Soul Mates — your karmic relationships can be anyone. Family member, coworker, the same waitress you always get at the diner, the same bus driver who takes you to work every day, literally anyone.

“Some people believe karmic relationships are agreements between two spirits to help the other grow before incarnating on Earth, with the sole purpose of learning something we weren’t able to in a previous lifetime,” she adds.

“Karmic relationships teach you about the world and others, whereas your soulmates help you learn your self-worth,” she says.

Soul Mates

People will oftentimes refer to all types of connections as soul mates. This is not the case as you are finding out. The definition of a soul mate is, according to Merriam-Webster’s is:

1: a person who is perfectly suited to another in temperament

2: a person who strongly resembles another in attitudes or beliefs

ideological soul mates

Have you ever seen or been a part of a relationship where the whispers on the street are that the couple in question is “involved”? But you know for certain that they aren’t. They’re the epitome of besties. They’ve each found their soul mate. Someone that they are perfectly comfortable around and can say anything or doing anything and not worry about judgment. It’s the person that you can be comfortable in your own skin with. The one who couldn’t care less if you’re wearing your ‘fat pants’ while watching a movie on TV together.

Twin Flames — the one relationship everyone craves but few find. And they leave you devastated when they end.

According to Sarah Regan, who writes for MBG Relationships:

A twin flame is an intense soul connection, sometimes called a “mirror soul,” thought to be a person’s other half. It’s based on the idea that sometimes one soul gets split into two bodies. One of the main characteristics of a twin flame relationship is that it will be both challenging and healing. This is due to the mirroring nature of a twin flame; they show you your deepest insecurities, fears, and shadows. But they also help you overcome them, and vice versa — your twin flame will be equally affected by you.

Importantly, licensed psychotherapist Babita Spinelli says, “There is a misnomer that a twin flame completes you; in reality, relationships are meant to encourage you to be more complete in your own right.”

As someone who has experienced all three, the ending of a relationship with a twin flame was the hardest. The pain was excruciating. Much worse than any physical pain I had ever experienced. Like a gut-wrenching scene from a movie where he speeds off madly in his car and flips, crashes, and burns with her standing there watching the whole thing unfold. Yeah. Like that.
