We are on my dog, Ewok’s, final hurrah in the mountains in Colorado.

We thought about staying home and canceling our spring break, but Ewok loves road trips. She loves looking out the car window and the buzz of the road under her small body.

When Ewok got sicker during this trip, we considered taking her to another animal ER two hours away. But then our son said, “Wait. Let’s talk about this.”

My husband and I had been scrambling to pack our bags, in case we had to stay at the ER overnight or for days.

“Wait,” our son said, throwing his body onto the bed. “I don’t want to take her to another hospital to be tortured only to extend her life by a week.”

Our son was seeing this crisis more clearly than me and my husband, thanks to The Karate Kid.

“Remember in Cobra Kai?” our son asked, “when Johnny and his friends sneak their dying friend out of the hospital for one last adventure?”

I nodded.

That scene stuck with me too. It reminded me of the last time my sisters and I took our dying father outside in a wheelchair. Dad wanted to see the world again. He had been lying in a bed, tubes hanging, IVs dripping.
