In 2005, Coldplay released their song “Fix You,” and it captured the imagination of people all over the world. It’s a grieving song. It’s a song you can sing along to. One of those songs you can damn near wail to — “and I will try to fix you.”

Chris Martin (of Coldplay) wrote it for Gwyneth Paltrow (who he married), who had recently lost her dad. There’s something so beautiful about a partner or spouse or friend that grieves alongside, right?

There have been times when my sadness was so dysfunctional, so complicated, I explored every possible way to deal. Unhealthy ways (drinking, for example). Healthy ways (art and music, just a few). So many ways. And yet there are days when a wave of loss covers me so entirely I can scarcely breathe.
