At The Wing, we are building a truly diverse community. After a year of growth and learning, The Wing’s executive team has been listening, resetting, and working to lay down some new foundations for the future of our community. We’re looking forward to bringing all the best of The Wing to our members, today and every day.

Here’s what we are doing to further our mission:

Our People

Note: These are updates on The Wing’s internal practices as an employer, but we believe in transparently sharing out these efforts to our community so you can understand how we do what we do.

  • We have adopted more inclusive recruiting practices that require each hiring manager, before a new position is filled, to conduct an inclusivity assessment to ensure they interview a diverse slate of candidates, engage a diverse interview panel, and provide a consistent experience for every candidate at The Wing.
  • We are launching mandatory racial literacy and anti-bias training for execs and directors that begins in April.
  • Currently, about 40% of all director-level and above roles are filled by POC. With the adoption of the new more inclusive hiring practices described above, we anticipate that number going up.
  • Beginning in April, all full-time employees of The Wing will have access to more cost-effective and inclusive benefit offerings including transgender-inclusive medical benefits for employees and dependents, pregnancy termination coverage, and increased coverage for families.

Accessibility and Transparency

  • We have upgraded the physical accessibility of several of our locations. In DC, we have added more accessible doors and a lift, and in our soon-to-be-open Upper West Side Space, we have added a lift to ensure the space is as accessible as possible. All floors of our newest space in Williamsburg are fully accessible.
  • We are in the process of testing various membership pricing tiers in an effort to broaden our membership and make it more financially inclusive. We will update the community when there is more news to share.

Community Empowerment

  • The Wing’s Culture Code will launch in April 2020 to help shape the behavior and culture of our community — for employees, members, guests, and collaborators.
  • New onboarding and orientation procedures for new members, including a mandatory section of Flight School, will begin in May 2020.
  • We welcomed 250 new scholarship members with home bases in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York, and San Francisco. The recipients range from a full-spectrum doula who serves formerly incarcerated populations to the operator of a non-profit that supports victims of sexual violence to an art teacher whose classes look at art through the lens of the African Diaspora.
  • Groups are here and coming to the app, meaning members can now form their own affinity or interest-based clubs. We already have over 200 that have been formed by current members, ranging from Mahjong Club to a Queer Wing Meet-Up. This month, members will have the ability to organize a group in The Wing’s app and stay connected even when outside of our spaces.

Moving forward, the Executive Team will be periodically sharing updates and news from inside The Wing HQ. The Wing is constantly evolving and holding ourselves accountable so we can create something society itself is reaching for: many people sharing the best of themselves to advance all of us, together.

We’re here for it.

Thanks,

The Executive Team @ The Wing
