The AWU has met with Downer after crews using Downer mixes have reported blood noses and illnesses. The last couple of weeks has seen a rise in fuming issues reported from asphalt mixes from Downer with over 100ton of product being sent back by crews. Downer is aware of the issue but hasn’t identified the cause. AWU Organiser Nick Blackford said crews need to protect themselves. “During the investigation, Worksafe recommend wearing masks. This is only an interim measure whilst there is an investigation into the cause and the AWU recommends that if you are concerned that it is essential to use a mask, wear a tester and report it. But if it is making you sick, send the load back. Your health is important.”

Members concerned can contact AWU Asphalt Organiser Nick Blackford on 0438 667 174 or email nicholas.blackford@awu.net.au. You can also report any suspect mixes to the AWU using this form: www.surveymonkey.com/r/awuasphalt
