CityLab: A Look at the Painstaking, Intricate Art of Globemaking

“Ultimately, the art within globemaking is attaching a wet piece of paper to a sphere.”

Mastering a craft is extremely difficult, extraordinarily time consuming and wildly rare. I love finding these stories of artists coming into their own.

KeepGoing: [Twenty] years later, the story of Suck.com, the first great website

“AT&T was the first sponsor, purchasing six months of page views. “Have you ever clicked your mouse right here?” asked what many consider the first banner ad. “You will.””

While I’m not sure how this found it’s way to my pile, I loved the long read of these early web publishing pioneers.

Product Hunt: Daniel Pink #AMA

One of my favorite authors (and local to DC), Daniel Pink, does an “Ask Me Anything” or AMA on Product Hunt yesterday.

“Question: Could you share with us, your best tips on time management and mental stability for entrepreneurs?

Answer: That’s an important question. And there’s no easy answer. But at a broad level, let me offer up some general principles:

  1. Say no to most things. I heard something the other day that really resonated with me: “If it’s not a hell yes, then it should be a no.” One of the most important decisions you make is deciding what not to do.
  2. You know all the talk about getting enough sleep? It’s true. Don’t sacrifice sleep. Instead, do fewer things well.
  3. Likewise, you know all the talk about exercise? It’s also true. It’s one of the few things that is almost always beneficial almost all the time.
  4. Figure out your best time to do productive work. For me, it’s the morning. So when I’m writing book or a long article, the mornings are sacrosanct. No email. No phone. No Twitter. Just me, a blinking cursor, and a lot of muttering.”

Forbes: Disney’s tech innovation is my nightmare

“In an age where so much of our children’s lives revolve around screens and schedules, I was kind of hoping for an oasis. Instead, we’re headed to mission control.”

This is why less and less the big planned vacations become just “trips”. Anxiety around planning makes the anticipation and eventual excitement far less appealing.

Medium: Your $4 t-shirt is costing you millions

“Done properly, one shirt can deliver tens of thousands of impressions worth thousands of dollars. Done poorly, they will just get thrown in the trash and never worn — worth pretty much zero.”

This point by point breakdown of the perfect swag t-shirt is amazing.

Wiselike: Dave Weinberg AMA

Yesterday, Wiselike, a new AMA-style site launched in beta and thanks to Workmill reader, Tamar Weinberg, I am now actively playing around on it. In just the first few hours I found myself oddly addicted to answering the few questions I was asked, like

“How did you come up with the idea for loop88? Seems like a really great idea to take advantage of a platform that is now worth billions. What inspired you to go after Pinterest?”

Diving in got me excited to write again — can’t wait for more question.

Fun video of the week…

Devour: UNCONTAINABLE

“It took a lot of shipping containers to build BMX ramps big enough for Drew Bezanson.” Thanks to my co-founder, Ariel Remer, for this great find.

Until next week :)
