Oil Importations: How the dependence of oil encourages new energy sources for automobiles
Once the mass production of automobiles were perfected by people like Henry Ford, almost everybody wanted to get their hands on one. This was one of the main reasons the United States got involved in the oil mining industry during the 19th century(Naab). However as time passed there was not enough oil to adequately supply all the parts of America with fuel. Looking to meet the demand of oil in the American Economy certain opportunists saw the need to look for Oil in other parts of the world.
Fast forward fifty years America consistently imports more oil than it produces. Due to Americas excessive consumption of oil the American economy has an extremely high trade deficit when it comes to the natural resource of oil. “Such a high trade deficit forces America to be extremely dependent on oil rich nations such as Russia and Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia” (Naab). However if there is one thing America does not like doing is pumping money into other countries without the prospect of receiving any part of it back. Due to this some people in America have proposed ways to generate more oil within the Americans sphere of influence, a notable method of doing so is fracking.
Fracking is “the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes, etc. so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.” Though such a method seems like a perfect solution there are many negatives caused by fracking that some people refuse in order to obtain more oil at a cheaper price. Fracking has been known to cause Earthquakes, increase possibility of oil spills, an taint surrounding vegetation. For along time America was “stuck between a rock and a hard places” so to speak, either keep on buying oil from foreign nations increasing the trade deficit or try to produce more oil from within the country at the cost of damaging the environment. Here steps in alternative fuel sources.
