Respect Alex Smith

Alex Smith is in his prime and no one knows. You’re saying to yourself this is an overreaction(as the Chiefs just beat the Patriots), but hear me out.

Over his last four seasons, Smith has thrown for over 3,000 yards, and for 20 or more touchdowns in 2 out of 4 of those seasons. Now, you might be saying, statistics alone don’t explain greatness. However, look at the system Smith plays in. It is widely known that his coach Andy Reid emphasizes running the ball, and West Coast system concepts. Playing in a ball control offense will never allow you to put up massive numbers like Tom Brady or Drew Brees. So, Smith deserves a bit of a break in this department.

Furthermore, Smith also elevates his team. Go ahead. Open up your computer and research the players Smith has played with.

Of course, there are the big names like Travis Kelce, and Jamaal Charles, but beyond that who else do you remember that he has played with in the last four years? I’ll wait.

I’ll throw you a bone, and give you Jeremy Maclin. But Jeremy Maclin wasn’t the same player in Kansas City that he was in Philly. In my opinion, I don’t think Maclin was that great when he played in green.

Point is, give credit, where credit is due. Smith has had 3,000 yard seasons with personnel that is lackluster.

Chris Conley, seriously?

If Tom Brady had this same personnel, we would be saying, as we already do, that Brady is the next Montana or better.

Now, don’t conflate advocating Smith is in his prime with saying that he’s a Super Bowl QB. I don’t think he is. But you can’t ignore what he did against the Patriots last night. You can’t ignore that he’s had success with mediocre talent, and you can’t ignore how often the Chiefs have gotten to the playoffs with Smith at the helm.

So, quiet down the Patrick Mahomes is going to take over the Chiefs starting QB job noise. Smith is here to stay a little bit longer.
