So there’s a lot of talk right now about how much of Raw’s intense John Cena vs. Roman Reigns promo fight was scripted and how much of it was off the cuff. One thing that can’t be denied is just how much people are talking. This is like The Miz on Talking Smack level of interest. You know the big thing though? It doesn’t matter how much was shoot and how much wasn’t.

Roman Reigns was never supposed to win this promo.

Right now the important thing is to establish that Roman Reigns is a weak, inept sports entertainer. He was called a bootleg John Cena because so many fans believe that that’s what he is. So the point of this promo was to establish everything that the fans believe about Reigns is correct.

Afterwards, when the match happens, that’s when they’re going to show that it’s actually completely wrong.

A lot of people see the one major similarity between Reigns and Cena, that being the strong push and the superman like booking, and consider the two to be virtually the same. Those people were the target of this promo. They drew relevant attention to what everybody thinks so that they can now throw a comparison.

Reigns is a much more physical wrestler than Cena. His promos are shorter and much more intense while also being less freeflowing and natural. Reigns has friends, and The Shield will undoubtedly be a big part of Reigns’ run in to Survivor Series. He’s also taller and has black hair and will probably win this match.

In order to get from point A to point B we have to establish what point A is. Roman Reigns is not comfortable talking, but he is ready for a fight. Don’t be surprised if the next few weeks seem annoyingly similar because the differences are very subtle.

The whole point is to casually go from a point where these two are exactly the same to a point where they’re totally different. Four weeks is a long time.

That moment will come at No Mercy. With Cena due to go back to Hollywood sooner rather than later, my money is on Roman Reigns. He doesn’t need to talk. He’s not a sports entertainer. He’s a brawler.
