Cole Hamels Reaches Strikeout Milestone
Cole Hamels, stood back off the mound, scanned the crowd and took it all in. Not a single person remained seated at Wrigley Field after the lefty recorded his 2,500th strikeout in the top of the third inning Tuesday night.
“It’s a special moment,” Hamels told MLB.com’s Jordan Bastain, after the 3–1 loss against the White Sox. “To get that moment where they appreciate what I’ve been able to accomplish, that’s…It blows me away. I’m fortunate to be in this position. I obviously want to keep continuing and doing it as long as I possibly can.”
Hamels received countless tweets and praises following his 2,500th strikeout against White Sox starter Ivan Nova. He joins just nine other starting left-handers in Major League history to reach the milestone.
He’s made his mark in MLB history and can now etch his name next to guys like Randy Johnson (4,875), Steve Carlton (4,136), CC Sabathia (3,036), Mickey Lolich (2,832), Frank Tanana (2,773), Chuck Finley (2,610) Tom Glavine (2,607), Warren Spahn (2,583), and Jerry Koosman (2,556).
While the outcome of the game wasn’t a win in Hamel’s favor, he did manage to finish with eight strikeouts over seven innings and has posted an impressive .31 ERA in his last four starts, going 28 innings without allowing a run.
