Here we are early in the season and Joe Maddon’s move to make Javier Baez the second hitter in the lineup is blooming right before our eyes. The Cubs whooped up on the Rockies 16–4 tonight and Baez was a big reason why.

The Cubs would get on the board early with a two run home run by Javier Baez who has been on a roll as of late. Baez is 10 for his last 18 plate appearances and 13 of those have been for extra base hits. He is showing he is capable of hitting all over the lineup but more specifically in the two hole. The Rockies would soon answer with three runs off Kyle Hendricks in the first inning to take a 3–2 and that’s where the Cubs’ bats took over.

The Cubs would play small ball in the 3rd and 5th inning to gain the lead back by knocking in a couple runs on groundouts. Jason Heyward would join the party with a one run triple in the 6th scoring Addison Russell. Kyle Schwarber would blast a three run home run in the 6th which ended up being a 7 run inning for the Cubs.

Kyle Hendricks allowed 3 runs over 5 innings pitched, he also truck out 6 Rockies batters along the way. Mike Montgomery and Justin Wilson came out of the pen for the Cubs to finish off the game.

The big story moving forward is the progression of Javier Baez in the two hole. His prodcution after the lead off man reaches can take the Cubs to another level all while keeping Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo batting 3rd and 4th.

The Cubs are now 9–8 on the young season. Yu Darvish will take the mound for the Cubs tomorrow night at 8:10pm CST.
