After an eventful Opening Day, the red-hot Chicago Cubs’ bats cooled as the pitching did their best to stay in the game. Bryant’s home run, Kyle Hendrick’s 100th start, and Eddie Butler’s relief appearance were not enough to win to secure a win. Instead the Miami Marlin scored a run in the 17th inning for their first win of the season.

The longest game of the season (so far) started off when Kris Bryant hit his first home run of 2018.

The Cubs lead did not last long when former Cub Starlin Castro singled in Lewis Brinson to tie the game. It was the only run by either teams until the game reach the five hour and eighteen minute mark.

Of all the pitchers in the 17-inning game, Eddie Butler pitched the longest at seven innings. Butler got two quick outs in the bottom of the seventeenth then followed it up by giving up two singles.

Brandon Morrow came into the game to face Miguel Rojas. Morrow first pitch goes for a ball, his next ends up being smacked a single to score Brian Anderson and get the win.

Kyle Hendricks earned a no decision, going six innings while allowing 4 hits, 3 walks, 1 run and striking out five.

At the plate, the team struggled to get hits to advance base runners and struck out twenty times. Three of those came from Kyle Schwarber and another two from Jason Heyward. Heyward did not even come into the game until the ninth inning.

At least the next game is not scheduled for Saturday morning/afternoon. The Cubs will play Saturday night at 6:10 pm CST at Marlins Park. The Cubs free-agency prize Yu Darvish will make his first start for the Cubs in front of maybe 15,000 (mostly Cubs’) fans.
