Generally, writers are readers.

Not always, of course. I own a writing school and it’s pretty surprising to me how often I’m asked whether reading is really essential to writing.

Either that, or I’m told by a writer that they just don’t read. Not because they don’t like to. They don’t have time. They’re too distracted. Whatever it is, there’s some reason why.

But, really, in generally, writers are readers. As they should be, for many reasons.

Including these:

  • Writers tend to love stories, and there are stories in books.
  • Writers are storytellers, and reading books lets us examine and learn from the end result of master storytellers. Think of reading like an internship.
  • For the cost of a library card, we can experience the end result of thousands of writer’s work.
