Paranormal Romance is a subgenre of romance that works to blend in elements of speculative fiction as well — fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Its goal is to be a love story with strong threads of supernatural or paranormal elements that can not be explained away by science.

This is one of the largest subgenres in the romance genre and is often celebrated for it’s addition of story elements that are not entirely romantic. Where subgenres like contemporary romance walk the fine line of often being gratuitous, paranormal romance requires a fair amount of world-building that obscures that line even more.
