The Commonplace Book Project for 2021
I’ve never been able to do morning pages. I’m trying a morning paragraph this year.
Medium has introduced something call ‘short-form’ posts. No title. No subtitle. Bold the first line, so readers know what they’re getting into. And keep it under 150 words, so that your post will show in its entirety on your profile feed.
I was thinking about how I might give these short-form posts a try and I remembered last year, when I started The Commonplace Book Project, but abandoned it.
I just couldn’t keep up with the length of the posts on a daily basis.
But 150 words? I can do that.
And it fits perfectly with one of my goals in 2021. I’ve always wanted to be someone who does ‘morning pages.’ You know. Julia Cameron’s instruction to free write three pages every morning. It’s so not my style that I don’t even bother trying anymore.
But I’ve been thinking about my own advice about teeny, tiny goals. And how easy it is to just skip a thing entirely if it’s too big.
If your goal is to write 2000 words a day, you’re unlikely to write 200 words instead. You’re far more likely to just skip the whole thing. I tell my students that all the time. Make your goal so small…
