Why I’m Starting an Old School Email Newsletter.
The 2010s might want their medium back, but I’m not giving it to them.
I’ve been writing on Medium for almost ten years. Since long before anyone was being paid. Long before there were algorithms or distribution (in any of its myriad forms) to worry about.
I like blogging here. The interface is easy and attractive. There’s an audience already showing up to read.
But the truth is, there are also things I don’t like.
The lack of transparency and the way things change so fast around here, without adequate explanation to writers.
The fact that there’s no way for me to influence whether or not I’m boosted.
The way that I can’t count on the month, because it’s so all over the place. There’s just no way to figure out how to create a reliable, steady income stream.
But, most of all, I’ve never liked how difficult it is for me to get my posts in front of my actual readers. I’m not talking about potential readers. I mean the people who follow me.
The percentage of my followers who ever see my posts is — very small. Tiny.
