You Don’t Suck, You Just Haven’t Put in the Time

No one is born a master. (That means you.)

I want you to do something for me.

Think about something you really suck at. I mean, something that you are 100 percent sure you were born without the gene for.

Got it?

Here’s mine: dancing.

I’m a terrible dancer. Stiff and unnatural, I get all self-conscious and I feel like a baboon out there. It’s awful.

Now ask yourself this question.

How much time have you spent AS AN ADULT doing that thing?

My answer: Maybe ten hours total.

All of them involved alcohol.

None of them involved anything remotely like instruction or any attempt at learning or getting better. Most of the time I was in the middle of some big group desperately trying not to stand out in any way whatsoever.

Once I spent an hour dancing with a man at a bar when I was a reporter in Northern Nevada. He kept saying just let me lead you and I kept saying oh, my God, I can’t. I’m trying.

Now, think about something you’re really good at.
