Writing for Money Vs. Writing for Love
“If they wrote it to make money, don’t read it.”
What makes someone a writer?
Money?
Followers?
A book deal?
Love of the written word?
No, none of these things. These are the results of writing.
Someone once said, “If they wrote it to make money, don’t read it.”
This is a stupid statement. And an incredibly privileged one as well.
If you follow this “advice,” you would miss out on a lot of great literature.
I’m pretty sure the single mom on welfare who wrote Harry Potter in a café with her infant at her feet in a baby carrier wrote to get herself off welfare.
I’m pretty sure Tony Robbins wrote Money, Mastering the Game to make money. In fact, I’m willing to bet anything Tony Robbins wrote most of his books after he received huge advances to write them.
And, I know, many Silicon Valley dudes live and breathe Tony Robbins.
Most serious (note, I didn’t use the word professional because a lot of unprofessional writers earn a ton of money these days thanks to the internet) writers write for money.
