On Writing by Stephen King
Detailed book notes
About On Writing*
If you’ve been in the fiction writing world for any amount of time, you’ve no doubt heard of Stephen King’s On Writing*, a famous memoir X how-to book written by one of the most prolific and successful modern writers. I must confess I have never read King’s fiction (not my cup of tea), but I am always open to practical tips from experienced writers. You can learn from anyone and everyone, I believe.
On Writing is a sandwich of a book, with personal stories from King’s own life making up the first and last segments of the book, and useful writing tips that King learned on the job forming the middle. It’s one prolific and successful’s writer’s perspective on the craft, and as such is worth a read for every aspiring writer.

This section talks about King’s early memories, experiences, and family relationships — including a painful ear infection, his mom’s story about witnessing a suicide, going out to watch his favorite horror movies, and transcribing a horror movie to sell at school — it was his first experience making money off of his writing.
