When Evil Lurks (2023) is probably my favorite demon possession film I have seen this year. It’s vastly different in a plethora of ways. With the film not rated, the filmmakers weren’t afraid of crossing the line when it comes to violence and gore. If you are triggered or sensitive to violence against animals and/or children, you probably shouldn’t watch this film.

Written and directed by Demián Rugna, When Evil Lurks takes place in a remote village in South America. Two brothers discover a body that’s been dismembered which leads them to a house. In that house there is a man that’s been infected with a demon. When the man dies, the demon will be born into the world. The two brothers help the owner of the land move the infected man off the land. However, that only causes the evil to spread. The two brothers must face the evil and attempt to fix what they’ve broken.

This is such a creepy, grisly, gory, and interesting addition to the demon possession genre. It’s also got an endearing subplot where one of the brothers tries to keep his children safe against the demon infection.

As a guy that has grown tired of the typical Catholic demon films, it’s refreshing to watch how demons go about causing chaos in other parts of the…
