Here are 5 ways to protect yourself from COVID-19.

1.) Wash your hands frequently.

Wash and rub your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds. Sing the Happy Birthday song twice! Doing this can kill viruses. And to be extra safe, you can clean your hands with alcohol.

2. Maintain at least 6 feet distance from people.

When people sneeze, cough or even talk, small liquid sprays from their nose and mouth and may contain COVID-19. Also, when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth by using your elbow or a tissue.

3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Hands can pick up the virus after you touch a surface and can transfer to your eyes, nose and mouth. It can then enter and infect your body.

4. Stay home and do not go out if it is not necessary.

There are now “Shelter in Place” orders in 42 states across the United States. This means that we are required to stay home and only leave for essential errands, such as buying groceries.

5. Keep yourself updated with news and follow their advice.

Stay informed by your national and local public health authority on how to protect yourself from COVID-19. Local governments are issuing their own public health orders, so follow your county’s or city’s social media pages.

Additional note about face masks:

If you are not infected by COVID-19, a mask might not be as helpful as you think. Most masks are too loose to prevent viruses which are already in the air. The main point of wearing masks is to prevent spreading the virus from the person who is infected; masks help to block the droplets coming out of the infected person.

Some counties are issuing public health orders requiring residents to wear masks in public now. If that is your situation, check out this video on how to make your own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6d3twpHwis.
