10 Things I’ve Learned In 2 Months Of Writing On Medium
Nov 4 · 2 min read
After spending so much time writing fiction (two feature screenplays in 2019 alone!) and in corporate communications, I realized I had put my personal blogging to the back burner for…well, years, if I’m being honest. It was time to change.
I buckled down and committed to two posts a week for September, and kept it up through October as well. I’ve seen great engagement, and I’ve heard crickets as well. Here are the main things I have learned.
- Discipline is king.
The start of any practice or project is filled with excitement, passion and joy. Then after the bliss wears off, it becomes a chore, and usually is neglected. Studies show it takes at least 16 days to develop a habit. The key to getting there is discipline. Takeaway: Start small and commit to it, then build up after establishing a foundation. - Experience trumps all.
Everyone has experienced something — whether its a successful project, a failed endeavour or a reworked attempt. No matter the outcome, it’s a personal experience. Readers are interested in the ins and outs of projects. Takeaway: Sharing your personal experience brings practical steps to those who want to write that first book, flesh out that first screenplay or build that dream business. Similarly, for those who are in the thick of their own projects, your experience will help normalize the process for others who might feel alone in it.
