Combine suspense with mystery to make your story irresistible. Add unanswered questions, hidden motives, and twists that shock us.

A thriller starts with a puzzle that begs to be solved. Unanswered questions drive the plot. Create urgency.

In a small town, a beloved mayor vanishes without a trace. His car is abandoned by the edge of a lake, but there’s no sign of him. Investigators discover his briefcase locked in the trunk. It contains a torn page from a diary with cryptic words. “The truth will destroy us all.” This clue raises questions. What truth? Who wanted it hidden? Where is the mayor?

Every character should add to the intrigue. Your protagonist might not know whom to trust. Readers should feel the same way. Introduce characters with unclear motivations and keep their intentions concealed.

A journalist investigates a series of deadly factory explosions, then is approached by a whistleblower who claims they have evidence of corporate negligence. The whistleblower seems helpful but refuses to reveal their identity…
