In the spirit of humor and the start of a new school year, I present to teachers everywhere, the educational consultant, and the workshop.

It is a fictional short story about John, the teacher, and his view of the workshop. Any resemblance to events, people, or any person in life is coincidental.

Meet John Doe.

John is back for another year of teaching. He is eager to start the school year and realizes this school year’s many directives. After many years of teaching in the classroom, he understands how the system works.

Increasing student state test scores is at the top of the list for John’s school. He also understands teaching to the test would provide the students with immediate results in state test scores.

However, this approach presents many problems for students wanting to pursue further study of the chosen content. John’s field is English.

The newly hired consultant recommends all teachers teach at grade level only. John, however, is concerned. What does teaching at grade level have to do with teaching students in class when students read at a 5th-grade level?
