Writing Is a Skill That Deserves To Be Nurtured
You don’t have to be a born writer to write well.
Through the years, many students have asked me what is the importance of writing, especially if they plan to go into careers where writing is not a huge part of the job. I always tell students that writing has “saved” me many times. That usually gets their attention.
I came to America at the age of seven. I didn’t speak a word of English. I observed my peers and tried to emulate their actions and words so that I could navigate each day at school, such as knowing when to say, “May I go use the restroom?” or “No, thank you.” Early on, I knew that I needed to understand and use language effectively to get what I needed.
How did writing save me?

Knowing how to write exceptional essays made college much easier. Regardless of the course, if the major exams were essays, I knew I had a better chance of determining my course grade. With objective exams, I had to show the professors what they wanted me to know. With essays I had more of a choice in selecting and demonstrating to the professors what I knew.
