So you want to know about The Year 200X, huh? I reckon you’re old enough. Legend tells of a forgotten portfolio site that never took off, and of the man who wanted to get his brand of writing about video games out into the larger world…

Hi there! My name is David Cole. Back in 2014, I started a super website called The Year 200X. It was a place for me to host work about video games while trying to find a job writing in the industry. It was a strange journey. I learned a lot. Primarily, I learned that I write a little differently about games than a lot of websites do.

The Year 200X is an online zine dedicated to writing that is “a little different.” Stuff that you won’t see on a lot of other games outlets. We’re all about creative non-fiction and storytelling. We attempt to push games writing into honest spaces and are interested in humanistic thought applied to life through games. If you like that idea, I encourage you to read! If you think that phrasing describes you, I encourage you to submit!

But what does “a little different” really mean? It’s simple. We don’t run reviews and we don’t run the typical experiential writing you see on bigger sites. We want stories that are raw and honest. We want stories from life, your life, in the way that only you can tell them. How have games shaped you? How has play informed your life — your ability to communicate, interact, or feel? Capture that in a piece and you’ve got something perfect for The Year 200X.

What we DON’T want are pieces that refuse to challenge the writer. We don’t want to hear about mundanity. We don’t want things that weren’t a little hard for your to write.

So let’s get together and build something great!

PS: It’s pronounced two-thousand-ex.
